Unranked Lopers Shake Off the Rust, Sweep Former RMAC Foe

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team hit .368, served up six aces and dug up 50 balls to sweep Colorado-Colorado Springs (-20, -19, -10) Thursday night in Colorado.

This was the Lopers first match against outside competition in 14 months. Meanwhile the Mountains Lions and the rest of the RMAC have been playing league matches since mid-January. UCCS is now 2-4 after the loss to UNK and a five-setter to Fort Lewis earlier on Thursday.

Senior right side Mary Katherine Wolfe (Omaha Marian) and junior outside Gracie Stienike (Gothenburg) had nine kills a piece with redshirt freshman middle Fallon Stutheit (Johnson) having eight. UNK shook the rust off as the night went along, see its hitting percentage go from .250 in set one to .619 in the third.

Springs got 12 kills from sophomore outside Lauryn Shockley. She more than had a busy day as she went for 18 in the loss to the FLC Skyhawks. Five teammates had between four and six kills vs. UNK.

The Mountain Lions came back from an 8-3 hole in set one to grab leads of 14-13 and 15-14. An 8-3 Loper spurt featured four kills, three unforced UCCS attack errors and an ace. A timeout didn't help as Wolfe, Stienike and Stutheit closed the set with kills.

UNK never trailed in the second set and used two more unforced errors and a kill from senior setter Madison Squiers (Kearney Catholic) to move ahead 20-15 and force UCCS to call timeout. Kills by Stienike and senior middle Anna Squiers (Kearney Catholic) made it 2-0 on the  scoreboard. Finally, the Lopers went 13-0-21 in the final set (.619), getting out to leads of 9-2, 15-14 and 17-6.

Squiers finished up with 29 assists and 10 digs with junior libero Lindsay Nottlemann (Lincoln) at 14 digs and an ace. Next, Stutheit hit .615, Wolfe hit .304 and was perfect in 10 serve receive chances with senior Monique Schafer (Stuart) and junior newcomer Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.) combing to receive 27 of 27 serves. UCCS had nine service errors in 51 attempts and committed 18 unforced attack errors on the night.

UNK faces fourth-ranked and unbeaten Metro State (5-0) Saturday at noon Central in Denver.
