A Return to Action Yields a Split in Denver

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored three in the fifth and added four more in the sixth to rally past the Regis Rangers, 8-6, in the first game of a double dip Friday afternoon in Denver.

RU scored five runs over the first three innings of the night cap to post a 6-4 win. UNK is now 2-4 on the young season while these were the Rangers first game.

UNK was down 3-1 after four full in game one but tied things up thanks to an RBI single by ## first baseman Hailey Schaneman (2 for 4, three RBI's) and a two-run shot to right by Omaha redshirt sophomore third baseman Bri Healy. All three runs scored after Regis recorded two outs.

In the Lopers next at-bat they grabbed a four-run lead thanks to four hits, walk and sac bunt. Omaha freshman Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 4) led off the inning with a homer to center with Lincoln junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Abbie Vodicka and Schaneman each having two-run doubles.

Junior newcomer Hannah Ice (Escondido, Calif.) earned her first win as a Loper by scattering 10 hits and issuing a walk over 5.2 innings. She fanned three and blanked Regis in three innings. Lincoln junior Kelsey Goodban worked the final 1.1 innings to pick up the save.

Regis jumped UNK again in the game two, scoring two in the first and adding three more in the third. A Kearney two-out error in the first allowed both of those runs to come home. The Lopers tallied two in its half of the fifth but never mounted a rally over the final two innings.

The Rangers sixth through nine hitters went a combined 5 for 10 with three runs and four RBI's. Freshman Megan Loveland allowed four earned in 4.2 innings to earn the win with sophomore Abby Covington having four K's in 2.1 innings to pickup the save.

Six different Lopers recorded a hit led by Omaha senior second baseman Kaylee Schutte (2 for3, one RBI & one run) and Blair sophomore third baseman Katie Gosker (two-run homer).

UNK heads to the Oklahoma City area tomorrow with hopes of playing four games over Sunday and Monday. Weather and field conditions may alter the opponent, start time and field location.
