Lopers Battle No. 10 Flagler in Florida

Kearney, Neb. – The 10th-ranked Flagler College Saints won the doubles point and took five singles matches to down Nebraska-Kearney, 6-1, Saturday morning in St. Augustine, Fla.

This was the season-opener for the Saints who are a member of the Peach Belt Conference. UNK, meanwhile, falls to 1-2. The Lopers had two matches last weekend in Missouri postponed.

A young UNK squad put up a fight against one of the highest ranked teams the program has ever faced. Flagler is now 26-11 in duals since the start of the 2018-19 season and plays in the very tough Southeast Region.

Kansas sophomore Brooklyn Hunter saw her first action of the year and teamed with freshman Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan) at number two doubles. They fell by just a 7-5 score to a German and Chilean. Flagler allowed a combined two points in the other doubles matches.

True freshman and midyear newcomer Melisa Becerra (Colombia) tallied UNK's lone team point with a straight sets win (6-4, 7-5) at number two singles. She beat sophomore and Division I transfer Luisa Hrda. Next, Hunter fought hard at number six singles but fell 6-4, 6-4 with Sherikulova losing her first set at number one singles by a similar score. Sophomore Eden Schlagenhauf (Germany) then won the second 6-0.

The Lopers are off until a March 7 road date vs. Augustana and SW Minnesota State. Both matches will be in Sioux Falls.
