Lopers Go 1-1 in Sioux Falls

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team returned to action this weekend, beating Southwest Minnesota State and falling to Augustana, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Lopers are now 2-3 on the young season with makeup matches set for next weekend in Springfield, Mo. Late Saturday night UNK bested the SMSU Mustangs (4-3) by a 6-1 margin. Augie, now 7-1 and winners of six straight, downed the Lopers 7-0 on Sunday morning.

Against Southwest, Kearney won at number one and two doubles by 6-1 counts. UNK then swept four of the singles matches in straight sets. Colombian newcomer Melisa Becerra won 6-0, 6-1 at number two, Kyrgyzstan freshman Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova won 6-4, 6-3 in the top spot with Kansas sophomore Brooklyn Hunter taking her number four match, 6-0, 6-1.

Things were tougher against one of the better teams in the Central Region. Augie allowed just four combined points in doubles and then swept each singles match. Hunter did score three points in her first set loss to junior Laura Arce Vieyra at number three singles.

UNK faces the Harding (Ark.) Bison Friday and then the Drury (Mo.) Panthers Saturday. These duals were originally scheduled for early February.
