A Weekend Sweep Equals Six Straight

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Kelsey Goodban had two strong relief outings and Nebraska-Kearney used a balanced offensive attack to beat Illinois-Springfield, 8-6, and Drury (Mo.), 6-4, Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo.

These games were part of the Drury Invitational. The Lopers (8-6) won all four games this weekend, pushing its win streak to six in a row. It's the longest win streak for UNK in five years and the first time in 15 years UNK went 4-0 on a February weekend.

Goodban (Lincoln Pius) threw 3.1 innings in the victory over the UIS Prairie Stars (1-7) and then went the final five innings against the DU Panthers (2-1). Drury had won its first two games by a combined score of 30-8.

UNK used a six-run sixth to get by Springfield, who hail from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). A nine-hit attack was led by Lincoln junior center fielder Carlee Liesch (3 for 4, two runs & three RBI's) and Elkhorn senior second baseman Kaylee Schutte (2 for 4, one RBI).

The sixth featured six hits, an UIS error, passed ball, wild pitch and walk. Liesch had a two out, two-run double to cap things with Schutte bringing home a run with a single to left. The Prairie Stars made things interesting in its last at-bat as they scored three with two outs. However, Goodban (4-2) got a ground out to third to end things. She struck out five and walked none while allowing two earned.

The Lopers never trailed the Panthers, also from the GLVC, as they took advantage of two errors to grab a 2-0 lead in the first. Pitcher Lauren Beier hit a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the fifth to tie things at four but UNK responded quickly, scoring twice in its half of the sixth. Schutte (2 for 3) started things with a single to left and then a double steal by pinch runner Lauren Struebing (Kearney H.S.) and freshman right fielder Carly Dembowski (Lincoln North Star) broke the tie. Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) then belted a double to right to finish the scoring. She has now hit safely in all 14 games to date.

Goodban allowed three earned in five full innings of work. She fanned six and walked just one with Drury stranding eight on the base paths. With two down and a runner at second in the bottom of the seventh, Omaha sophomore left fielder Bri Healy (2 for 4) made a diving catch to complete the strong weekend.

UNK is off next weekend before beginning MIAA play at Lincoln and Central Missouri.
