UNK Splits on Opening Day

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's team started its 2020-21 season by beating Oklahoma Baptist, 6-1, and falling to Colorado Mesa, 5-2, Friday in Grand Island.

To start over a 12-hour day, the Lopers got singles wins from its three freshmen – Melisa Becerra (Colombia), Mia Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan), and Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) -- to down the OBU Bison from the Great American Conference.  Sherikulova won in straight sets in the top spot, Zamorano rallied from a set down to win at number two with Becerra blanking her OBU opponent.

UNK was just as dominant in doubles as they won all three matches, allowing a total of eight points. Sophomores Pranathi Gannavaram (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Thi Huynh (Lincoln North Star) won 6-4 at number two to secure the doubles team point.

CMU started the day with a 5-2 win over the Bison and then bested UNK by the same score in a dual that wrapped near midnight. Doubles was tied at one with the Mavericks securing the team point thanks to a 6-4 from the number three team of Carolena Campos and Julianna Campos.

Zamorano got the Lopers on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number three but Becerra dropped a heartbreaker (2-6, 6-4, 1-0; 10-7) a spot higher in the lineup. Sherikulova did best Issy Coman in a tiebreaker (6-3, 1-6, 1-0; 10-7) at number one singles.

UNK heads to Springfield, Mo., next weekend to battle the Harding (Ark.) Bison and Drury (Mo.) Panthers.
