Hornets Sting Loper Bats

Kearney, Neb.  – Graduate student Kelsey Phillips and sophomore Josie Harrison tossed complete game shut outs to power Emporia State over Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0 and 5-0, Friday afternoon in Kansas.

These were the first games for the Lopers (9-11, 1-5) since March 10th. With the wins, the Hornets improve to 12-8 (2-2) and to 7-5 at home.

Phillips moved to 5-2 by fanning seven, walking just two and keeping the Lopers hitless over the first 4.1 innings. She helped her own cause by belting a one-out double to left in the third. Five-hole hitter and graduate second baseman Gabby Biondo (2 for 3) brought her home with a double to left center. The Hornets added an insurance run in its half of the sixth thanks to a single and a double steal.

Colorado senior Melissa Gellermann (2-3) was the tough luck loser, allowing two earned over five full innings. She fanned six and walked just one in blanking E-State four innings.

UNK loaded the bases against Harrison (4-1) in the top of the first in game two but a pop up to short ended the inning. The Lopers mustered three hits and three walks the rest of the way with Harrison recording five strikeouts.

Emporia tallied two in the third and three more in the sixth to secure the sweep. The Hornets ended with just six hits with junior designated player and three-hole hitter Roni Raynes going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Each of the first five Hornets in the order recorded at least one hit.

Lincoln junior Kelsey Goodban (5-4) allowed four earned over five full innings with Omaha redshirt sophomore left fielder and three-hole hitter Bri Healy pacing the offense with a 2 for 4 effort.

UNK heads to Topeka on Saturday to face Washburn. The Ichabods (17-4) split a double header with Fort Hays State on Friday.
