Lopers Clipped by the RiverHawks

Kearney, Neb. – Freshmen Melisa Becerra and Jazmin Zamorano won singles matches in straight sets but Northeastern State won three close matches to get by Nebraska-Kearney, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Harmon Park.

The RiverHawks, ranked 10th in the Central Region, win a fourth in a row to improve to 6-4 (2-0 MIAA) while a young Loper squad drops to 3-8 (0-2).

Becerra (Colombia) earned her third win at number one singles with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over British senior Kristela Vidnere. Two spots lower in the lineup, Zamorano (Mexico) bested Division I transfer and Argentina sophomore Chiara Carnelutti by a 6-2, 6-1, score. She now has four singles wins on the spring.

NSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the dual thanks to doubles wins of 7-5 (No. 3) and 7-6 (No. 2). At number six singles Elkhorn senior Claire Neil took her the first set, 6-1, but her 'Hawk counterpart won the net two, 6-3 & 10-7. Finally, NSU took the other four singles matches in straight sets.

UNK is at Missouri Western State (6-2) next Saturday.
