Regionally-Ranked Griffs Down the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Jazmin Zamorano picked up her fifth singles victory of the year but regionally-ranked Missouri Western State took the other seven matches to down Nebraska-Kearney, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.

Having a breakthrough season, the Griffons improve to 8-2 (2-0) and earn its first-ever MIAA win over the Lopers (3-9, 0-3). MWSU came into the week ranked fifth in the Central and has now won five in a row.

Zamorano (Mexico) moved to 5-5 on the spring thanks to a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Australian sophomore Isabella MacGibbon at three singles. She is now second on the Lopers in singles wins.

MWSU took all three doubles matches with sophomore Brooklyn Hunter (Topeka, Kan.) and freshman Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan) falling by just a 7-5 count at number two. In singles, freshman Melisa Becerra put up a fight against Greece junior Ionna Lathouri in the top spot (6-4, 7-5).

The Lopers host For Hays State (3-3,0-3) on Wednesday afternoon. A scheduled dual vs. Colorado State-Pueblo that morning has been canceled.
