A Gem and Walk-Off Double Equals a Home Sweep

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Melissa Gellermann tossed a complete game two-hit shut out and redshirt junior center fielder Bri Healy smacked a two-out, walk-off double to right center to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep Northeastern State, 1-0 and 5-4, Friday afternoon at Patriot Park.

The Lopers (14-22, 5-15) have now won four of six while the RiverHawks (21-16, 9-10) see its postseason chances take a hit.

Gellermann (Grand Junction, Colo.) had a career effort in the first game as she needed just 81 pitches to get through seven full innings. She fanned two, walked two and allowed only singles in the fifth and seventh innings. Earning her third win of 2021, Gellermann is the first Loper pitcher to have a seven-inning complete game shut out in three years.

The game's lone run came across in the bottom of the third as nine-hole hitter and third baseman Avery Wood (Kearney H.S.) was plunked to start the inning. Junior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius) bunted her over two batters later and then freshman left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross) delivered a double down the right field line.

Junior leadoff hitter and shortstop Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) had two of UNK's five hits with NSU's Gail Young (13-8) going the distance as well. She threw 98 pitches, struck out five and didn't issue a walk.

The nightcap saw 'Hawks sophomore Jenna Chassie blank Kearney over the first five innings. Cleanup hitter and designated player Chloe Bohuslavicky had a pair of two RBI hits to stake NSU to a seemingly comfortable 4-0 lead.

However, the Loper sixth featured four runs thanks to four hits, wild pitch and error. Junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) had a two-run double to right center with pinch runner Candace Coleman (McCook) scoring the game tying run. On the play, she tagged up running to third and came home via throwing error.

Junior Kelsey Goodban (Lincoln Pius) earned her team-leading eighth win by blanking NSU over the final 2.1 innings. She worked out of a jam in the fifth thanks to one of her three K's and then sent the 'Hawks down in order in the top of the seventh.

UNK started its half of the seventh with a walk and a sac bunt. After a fielder's choice got the lead run out at third, senior designated player Lauren Struebing (Kearney H.S.) drew a walk after a nine-pitch at-bat. Healy (Omaha Central) followed with a double to right center that brought home Gaube from second. Gaube and Healy each went 2 for 4 with Streubing, coming on as a pinch hitter in the sixth, going 1 for 1 with a run scored.

The Lopers host the Rogers State Hillcats (24-13-1, 12-8) tomorrow at Dryden Park. Game times have been moved up to 12 and 2 p.m.
