Lopers Ruin No. 13 UCO's Perfect Home Season

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore center fielder Bri Healy hit a two-out, run scoring single in the top of the eighth inning and juniors Hannah Ice and Kelsey Goodban were strong in the circle to help Nebraska-Kearney stun No. 13 Central Oklahoma, 5-3, Friday evening in Edmond.

UNK almost got the sweep as they out hit the Bronchos 11-10 in game one but fell by a 5-3 score. UCO is now 30-10 (19-5) with the Lopers (15-25, 6-18) having split its last 10 games.

To hand UCO its first home loss in 17 tries, UNK saw Ice (Escondido, Calif.) work into the sixth inning with Goodban (Lincoln Pius) coming on and earning her team-leading ninth win. The Lopers erased a 2-0 deficit thanks to a three-run fourth that featured a two-run double from freshman left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross). She was one of four Lopers to have two hits in the game.

The 'Chos tied things in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-out rally. A walk and ground out put the tying run at second and another base knock tied things up. UCO then added another single and walk but Goodban got a fly out to center to get out of the bases loaded jam.

In the Loper eighth Lincoln juniors Abbie Vodicka and Carlee Liesch had back-to-back singles with one down. After Gaube reached via fielder's choice and Vodicka was put out a third, Healy (Omaha Central) smacked an 0-1 pitch to center. Junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) followed with a key double to left. UCO, out hit 10-9, went in order in the bottom of the inning.

Ice allowed three earned on nine hits and a walk in 5.2 innings. She also fanned four with Goodban tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. She struck out three 'Chos and didn't allow a hit.

Freshman catcher Katie Gosker (Blair) went 3 for 4, freshman designated player Carly Dembowski (Lincoln North Star) went 2 for 2 and Vodicka 2 for 4 in game one but UNK stranded 10 runners. Schaneman brought home two Loper runs with her eighth long ball of the spring.

UCO freshman Kylee Lynch improved to 15-3 by working around 10 hits over the first four innings with sophomore Bailey McKittrick earning her third save. She threw 3.0 scoreless innings with two K's to boot. At the plate freshman left fielder Jacie Minter had two RBI's including a solo homer.

Kearney neads to Wichita on Saturday to face Newman. The Jets (6-29) have lost 11 in a row after getting swept by Fort Hays State today.
