UNK Gets Past Metro to Start the 2021-22 Year

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team swept doubles and took five of the six singles matches in straight sets to get past Metro State, 6-1, Thursday afternoon in Denver.

This was the Lopers opening competition of the 2021-22 season. An annual fall trip to Colorado will also feature duals vs. Colorado Mesa and Colorado State-Pueblo Friday in Pueblo.

A very young UNK squad ran past the Roadrunners by allowing just a combined 11 doubles points and dropping only a match in singles. Since the 2008-09 season, the Lopers are now 14-2 against Metro, a former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) rival.

After taking the doubles point, UNK rolled through singles. Sophomore Melisa Becerra (Colombia) had to go extra time to get past junior Isabel Heras at number one (7-6: 2; 7-6: 5) but the rest of the lineup rolled. That included newcomers Masha Hatouka (No. 5) and Narindra Ranaivo (No. 6), each a true freshman.

Looking ahead to the weekend, UNK lost to CMU, 5-2, last winter while last facing CSUP in 2018-19 (7-0).
