Ichabods Move to 4-0 after Physical Friday Win

Kearney, Neb. – True freshman Khloe Schuckman scored two goals midway through the first half to help Washburn down Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was a non-MIAA game between the Lopers (1-4-0) and Ichabods (4-0-0); the two will meet next Sunday (Sept. 26) in Topeka to start official league play.

A 5-7 forward from Wichita, Schuckman already has four goals in her first four collegiate games. She tallied the game winner at 23:38 and then headed in a corner less than two minutes later. The game-winner came after junior Olivia Harriger stole a pass in Loper territory and sent the ball to a streaking Schuckman. She flicked it into the net from the left wing and from about eight yards out.

UNK had all three of its shots stopped by sophomore keeper Raegan Wells in the first have. Two came off the foot of St. Louis senior Bridget Barker with the other taken by Kansas redshirt sophomore Lily Engeman. Overall, WU had an 11-3 advantage shots and took five of the eight corners.

"That was a very physical game. Honestly, I thought we played some of the best soccer we've played this season. We just had a crazy two or three minutes where they scored both of their goals," Roberts said. "We were overplaying on the back when we shouldn't have. They went and picked it off and scored. On the set play … they are a big team. We don't have tons of height and they got in front of us."

More important than tonight's result was the already-banged up Lopers suffering two more injuries. Redshirt freshman Aspen Brandich (Colorado Springs) went down in the first half with South Dakota senior and team co-captain Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, S.D.) falling in the 72nd minute. Brandich has UNK's lone goal of 2021 with Kirsch being a mainstay of the program.

"Result aside, score aside mine and my team's thoughts are with Kassidy and Aspen. At the end of the day that's the priority and that's where we're looking. Injuries like that overshadow what the result is," Roberts said. "We did get some people back but we had to manage their minutes tonight. We're not fully stacked right now."

UNK heads to Fort Hays State Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are now 2-1-2 after a 1-1 tie with Emporia State tonight.
