Tigers Take First Matchup

Kearney, Neb. – The Fort Hays State Tigers got goals from three reserves to down Nebraska-Kearney, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Kansas.

On a very blustery day, the Tigers improve to 3-1-2 while the Lopers fall to 1-5-0. This was a non-MIAA game; the two will play a league game October 29th at Cope Stadium.

With winds howling and swirling close to 30 miles per hour all game long, things were scoreless for almost the entire first half. Senior Jordan Thompson finally broke the scoreless tie at 31:42 when she tallied her second goal of the fall. Thompson got the ball just past midfield, raced down the right sideline and then cut to the box. There she rolled one in from about 12 yards out.

Redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) and the UNK defense kept it 1-0 for the next 40 minutes. Mounce recorded a season-best 11 saves but the Tigers scored in the 70th and 85th minutes to close the door. True freshman Alex Hutton tallied the second goal by getting into the box and rolling the ball under Mounce's leg and just into the corner of the Loper goal. Fifteen minutes later redshirt sophomore Carly Walker tallied her second goal of the season.

UNK got shots on goal by California senior Perla Navarro, Kansas redshirt sophomore Lily Engeman and Lincoln redshirt freshman Jacylan Doering but each was saved by Tiger keepers Maddie Meehan and Isabel Robben. Meehan went the first 45 with Robben replacing her at the break. Finally, Engeman and Colorado freshman Dolcie Hanlon went all 90 minutes with a banged up Loper team using nine subs overall.

UNK remains on the road next weekend as it travels to Emporia State and Washburn.
