No. 5 Hornets Sting Late in the First Half

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Makenzie Dimarco tallied a hat trick and No. 5 Emporia State struck for three goals late in the first half to down Nebraska-Kearney, 5-1, Friday evening in Kansas.

This was UNK's final non-MIAA contest of the fall. The Hornets (6-0-1) and Lopers (1-6-0) will meet again on Halloween at Cope Stadium. UNK is at Washburn on Sunday afternoon to begin official league play.

A banged up Loper squad blanked the Hornets over the first 29 minutes as redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) stopped two shots. However, Dimarco struck pay dirt at 29:58, her sixth goal of the year. She banged in a rebound header that had hit the crossbar and came out. Dimarco was the 2019 MIAA Freshman and Offense Player of the Year after tallying 18 goals and setting eight new E-State records.

UNK was stung by a corner kick at 31:09 as senior Aislinn Hughes scored off a kick taken by junior Hannah Woolery. The Lopers managed a corner a few minutes later but couldn't convert. Junior Joanie Westcoat finished the first half scoring with an unassisted goal at 36:50.

Kearney did cut the deficit to two when Kansas redshirt sophomore Ariella Mesa scored at 54:27. To record her second collegiate goal, Mesa took a pass from Missouri senior Bridget Barker and found the right lower corner of the ESU net. However, Dimarco countered with goals at 55:56 and 70:56 to salt things away.

Mounce ended up with five saves before being injured in the second half. Gretna freshman Rainna Daharsh took over and stopped four shots. Finally, going the distance in the field was Colorado freshman Dolcie Hanlon, Kansas redshirt sophomore Lily Engeman with New Jersey freshman Angelina Iocca at 82 minutes.

The WU Ichabods faced Fort Hays State Friday night.
