Early Goal Equals Season-Opening Win

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt freshman Aspen Brandich scored in the ninth minute and redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce stopped 10 shots to help Nebraska-Kearney down Minnesota State-Moorhead, 1-0, Thursday evening in Aberdeen, S.D.

This was the season-opener for both teams. This marks UNK's fifth season-opening win in its 13th year history (2009, 2010, 2013 and 2017).

In a driving rain storm for all 90 minutes, UNK flipped the field on the Dragons in the early going with a long ball by a redshirt sophomore defender Isabella Whiston (Lincoln East) bouncing high and eventually finding Navarro (Los Angeles) in enemy territory. She passed the ball to Brandich (Colorado Springs) who was defended near the top of the box. She fought off the MSUM defender, spun around and went top left for her first collegiate goal.

Senior Bridget Barker (St. Louis) came off the bench to get off a team-best four shots with Navarro and Brandich at two apiece. Super senior Megan Cook (Bellevue West), redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis (Wichita) and true freshman Dolcie Hanlon (Grand Junction, Colo.) went all 90 minutes. Finally, Mounce recorded her first win by saving six shots in the first half and four in the second. Her last save came in the 79th minute with Moorhead seeing a shot go just wide left 10 minutes later.

Senior Anna Steadland had a game-high six shots (three on goal) to pace Moorhead with nine teammates also getting into the shot column. The Dragons held a lead in shots, 20-9, with UNK having one more corner, 4-3. Finally, Sedlacek had three saves.

UNK faces Montana State-Billings Sunday at 1 p.m. The Yellowjackets lost to Northern State, 1-0, Thursday night.
