Lopers Get Past Top Eastern Competition on Opening Day

Kearney, Neb. – True freshman outside Asha Regier had 22 combined kills and senior middle Anna Squiers registered a combined eight blocks as No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney swept Molloy College of New York (-25, -11, -19) and American International College of Massachusetts (-16, -18, -19, -16) Friday afternoon in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

This was opening day for Loper volleyball with the matches part of the Molloy Invite. UNK battles Wilmington University of Delaware (8 a.m.) and No. 27 Gannon University of Pennsylvania (2 p.m.) on Saturday.

Regier (Newton, Kan.) had 11 kills in each match while hitting .348 vs. MC and .259 against the AIC Yellowjackets. She also had six digs on a block on the day. In the same spot, Alliance sophomore Emersen Cyza and Hastings redshirt sophomore Cecilia Beahm had big efforts in the win over AIC, Cyza hitting .333 with seven kills and Beahm coming in late to tally five kills in 13 swings (.385 pct.).

This was the 'Jackets first match of 2021, a school from Springfield, Mass., that's picked to win the 14-team Northeast 10 Conference. Freshman outside Amber Williams had quite the collegiate debut, going for 18 kills and hitting .237 with Puerto Rico graduate student Andrea Serra-Rosa at 10 kills, eight digs and three blocks.

UNK out hit AIC by over 100 points, took advantage of 10 service errors and had nine team blocks but was pushed in all four sets. The Lopers closed the first on an 11-5 run, scored the first five points in the fourth and scored seven of the last nine points in the second. AIC hit 344 (13-2-32) to win the third.

Squiers (Kearney Catholic) tallied six kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces with Madison Squiers at 37 assists, six kills, five blocks, four digs and three aces. Finally, Lincoln senior libero Lindsay Nottlemann dug up a match-high 24 balls.

Molloy is the preseason favorites in the seven-team East Coast Conference and a 2019 Elite Eight qualifier. UNK hit a solid. 306, served up seven aces and managed eight team blocks but was in a dogfight in the first.

Back-to-back aces from Colorado senior defensive specialist Breanna Jones made it 22-18 and helped cap an 8-4 Loper run. However, the Lions responded with two kills, an ace and three unforced UNK errors to reach set set point. An Anna Squiers kill tied things back up and Kearney didn't trail again, taking a 1-0 lead after another kill by Squiers and one from Lincoln redshirt freshman right side Lauren Taubenheim. UNK didn't trail over the final two sets.

Besides Regier, Squiers (nine) and Cyza (eight) combined for 17 kills. Next, Taubenheim had seven digs, five kills and three stuffs with Anna Squiers having three of UNK's seven aces.
