UNK Splits on Opening Day

Kearney, Neb. – Senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman hit a three-run home run in the first inning and sophomore catcher Katie Gosker had a two-run shot in the sixth as Nebraska-Kearney won its season-opener, 8-4, over Colorado School of Mines Friday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.

The game was part of the three-day Visit Lubbock Collegiate Challenge. UNK lost to tourney host Lubbock Christian, 6-1, later on Friday. The Lopers face former RMAC rivals Chadron State and Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday.

Against the Orediggers (0-5), UNK erased a 1-0 deficit as Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) delivered a one-out, three-run shot over the center field wall in the bottom of the first. An error and walk put two Lopers on before Schaneman, the clean up hitter, stepped to the plate.

Mines tied things up with single runs in the third and fourth innings with UNK busting things open thanks to a five-run sixth. Freshman shortstop/pitcher Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) started the rally with a one-out double down the left field line. That brought up Gosker (Blair), who had a team-high 10 dingers in 2021. On a sunny and breezy day in Northwest Texas, she hit the game-winner to center.

For added measure UNK tacked on three more runs as senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) delivered a bases loaded single to center with two down. On the play, senior third baseman Avery Wood (Kearney) came all the way around from first to score thanks to an errant throw.

Senior Hannah Ice (Escondido, Calif.) earned the win in relief as she allowed one earned over 2.1 innings. Thomason got the save in her first collegiate pitching appearance as she coaxed Mines to line into a game-ending double play. Finally, sophomore lefty Madison Rosenthal (Johnstown, Colo.) allowed two earned and fanned two over the first four innings.

Senior right-hander Taylor Franco improved to 3-0 and helped the LCU Chaparrals go to 4-2 on the young season by blanking UNK over six innings later on Friday. She allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning four. Offensively, the Chaps were efficient as they scored six runs via five hits (four singles), three walks, a hit batter and three Loper errors.

For UNK, Liesch went 2 for 3 from the three-hole, freshman Kylee Bruning (Arlington) had a pinch-hit RBI single in her first collegiate at-bat and sophomore newcomer Stacy Bott (Thornton, Colo.) allowed no earned runs over the final two innings.
