Late Rally Lifts Cougars

Kearney Neb. – The Colorado Christian Cougars scored three runs in the top of the seventh to down Nebraska-Kearney, 4-2, Sunday morning in Lubbock, Texas.

This was the third and final day of the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic. UNK (2-3) split on Friday and Saturday and then finished the trip with a single game today. It was a cold one as temps were in the high 30's.

The Cougars (7-2), one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason favorites, started the seventh with four straight hits top break a 1-1 tie. First baseman Samaria Roope homered to left, shortstop Kayla Middleton (2 for 3) and second baseman Miki Berg hit back-to-back doubles and then right fielder Logan Menzies singled to right.

UNK tried to counter as senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) started the bottom of the inning with her second dinger of the year and sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross Catholic) walked. However, junior Alexis Hamilton got two strikeouts and a fielder's choice to end the threat and game.

It was mainly a pitcher's duel between CCU senior Abrie Castillo (6.0 IP, two earned runs, five K's and walk) and UNK underclassmen Madison Rosenthal (2.0 IP, zero runs, one K) and Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.). Thomason threw the last five innings and limited CCU to a run until the faithful seventh. She fanned six and walked one in her longest outing to date.

Offensively, sophomore catcher Katie Gosker (Blair) hit her third homer of the young season with Schaneman finishing 2 for 3. On the weekend, UNK came in at .252 with four doubles, six dingers and 23 RBI's. Senior catcher/third baseman Avery Wood (Kearney) hit .400 with Schaneman at .357. Five pitchers combined for a 3.82 ERA, 29 K's and just 14 walks over 33.0 innings.

UNK heads to the Oklahoma City area next weekend for another five games in three days.
