Regular Season Wraps Up

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team won a combined 14 events at the Loper Tune Up and Nebraska Tune Up Friday night in Cushing Coliseum and Lincoln.

These were UNK's final regular season indoor meets of the season; the MIAA Championships are next weekend at Northwest Missouri.

At UNL, Fremont redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson ran the second fastest mile (4:07.15) in school-history. That winning time places him 26th nationally and makes him one of four Lopers on that list. Next, Fremont freshman Mara Hemmer ran a career-best 2:15.46 at 800-meters to finish fourth. One of four Lopers in the top 15, that moves her up to fifth on the all-time list. Finally in the Capital City, Iowa senior Maddie Bach was third in the mile (5:03.47) with the 4x4 relay team placing third (4:13.86). Hemmer ran the second leg for that squad.

UNK had a strong showing in the men's weight throw in its own building. Central City junior Andrew Schuller won (career-best 63-4), Giltner sophomore Alex Goracke was runner up (61-11.75) with Bridgeport junior Connor Wiggins third (61-6.25). Each throw places them in the top 27 nationally with Schuller now third in Loper lore with Wiggins seventh. In the shot, Goracke won with a toss (54-0.50) that puts him 36th on the national list.

In other field events, Kearney sophomore Brayden Sorensen won the high jump (6-8.75), Texas junior Kylan Herrera led the way in the long jump (22-10.50), Kearney freshman Colby Spangler was first in the triple jump (44-8) with the Loper women winning four times in the field. That group was paced by Battle Creek freshman Abby Meinke who had a career-best 55-8.50 in the weight throw (ninth all-time) and David City freshman Gabrielle Oborny clearing 11-6.25 in the vault.

Overall in Cushing, UNK went 1-2 in eight different events. Kearney freshman Samantha Scarlett (8.11) and Norfolk freshman Jackson Clausen (7.19) won at 60-meters as did Kearney senior Cole Willis (1:52.06) and Abie junior Rebekah Roh (2:20.28) in the 800. Finally, O'Neill sophomore Abby Everitt was just off her career-best effort to win the high jump (5-5.75) and moves up to 36th nationally with Willis now fifth all-time in the 800.
