Lopers Conquer the Marauders

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Kelsey Goodban tossed a five-hit complete game shut out and freshman Lyndsey Roth went 3 for 4 to help Nebraska-Kearney roll past Mary (N.D.), 6-0, Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.

This game was part of the Washburn Invite. The multi-team tourney began Saturday with UNK (4-8) falling to Missouri-St. Louis, 5-4, on Sunday morning to start the weekend. The Lopers face Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State on Monday; the tourney was pushed back a full day due to weather.

Goodban (Lincoln Pius X) fanned nine and walked none in her best outing as a Loper. She allowed the Marauders (0-10) from the NSIC just four singles and a double and retired the first 10 batters she faced.

Offensively, Roth (Lincoln North Star) had two singles, a double and scored a run from her cleanup spot. Fellow first-year classmate Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) went 2 for 4 from the three-hole, smacking her first collegiate dinger in the fifth. It was a two-run shot and gave UNK a 3-0 lead. Next, freshman shortstop Kylee Bruning (Arlington) went 2 for 3 with two RBI's with senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Liesch belted her 10th and 11th career homers in game one. They were a two-run and a solo shot with Roth adding a solo long ball in the fourth. However, UMSL (4-5) won its third straight game by scoring all of its runs in three straight innings and blanking UNK over the final three.

The teams combined for just 12 hits with Liesch (3 for 4, two runs & three RBI's) leading the way. Triton junior pitcher Jenna Towle not only earned her third win (5.0 IP, three K's, four earned) but also was 1 for 3 with a two-run homer. Third baseman McKenzie Lamos hit a two-run shot in the third as well.
