Aggies Take Top 25 Showdown

Kearney, Neb. – The sixth-ranked Cameron University Aggies picked up its third win over a Top 25 team this spring as it defeated No. 15 Nebraska-Kearney, 5-2, Thursday afternoon in Lawton, Okla.

CU (7-2) and UNK (7-3) have been two of the surprise teams in NCAA Division II this 2021-22 season. Both vaulted into the most recent edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings.

From the Lone Star Conference, CU has now won five in a row after taking all three doubles matches today and winning four singles matches in straight sets. Previously, the Aggies upset national powers Columbus (Ga.) State and Southwest (Mo.) Baptist. Cameron's losses have been to the top-ranked junior college team, Tyler (Texas), and Division I Texas-Arlington.

Freshman Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and sophomore Mia Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan) held leads of 2-0 and 6-5 at number two doubles but fell by a 7-6 (4) score. The Aggies allowed a combined three points in the other two matchups.

In singles, sophomore Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) rallied past Ukraine freshman Kateryna Rudenko to win a 2:29 match at number four (2-6, 6-2, 7-6; 2). Zamorano trailed 4-1 in the third but came all the way back to record her eighth win of the dual season. Next, freshman Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) was on the court for 2:54 but took her number two match 6-7, 7-5, 1-0. Bernthal rallied from a 4-1 hole against the 48th-ranked player in D2 in the first but led most of the way in the second set. The epic third set saw her win 16-14 as she came back from a 4-1 hole.

Cameron had secured the dual victory before these results. Both Sherikuolva and Ranaivo lost their first sets by 7-5 scores; both had leads early on.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Lopers as they face No. 24 Angelo (Texas) State on Saturday and No. 23 Midwestern (Texas) State on Monday.
