Lopers Sweep Bearcats in MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team used eight hits and drew 13 walks in game one and got a complete game three-hitter from senior Kelsey Goodban to sweep a double header from Northwest Missouri State, 12-4 and 4-1, Monday afternoon in Maryville.

This was the first MIAA games for both teams. Due to wintry weather, the double header was pushed back three full days. UNK (8-12) heads to Missouri Western State (7-11, 2-0) on Tuesday for another double dip at 12/2 p.m. The Griffs swept Fort Hays State in their league opener.

In game one, the Bearcats (5-18, 0-2) were up 4-2 heading into the top of the fifth. They scored one in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth to erase an early 2-0 deficit. After limited to a single run over four innings, the Loper bats got going as they threw up a five-spot in the sixth and added four more in the seventh.

California freshman pitcher/third baseman Sydney Thomason (2 for 5, two runs & three RBI's) hit a two-run shot in the first with Blair sophomore catcher Katie Gosker (1 for 2, two runs & three walks) having a "Grand Slam" in the big fifth. The shot came with two down with two walks and single loading the bases. NW starter Breck Dickey struck out seven but had 10 of the walks with reserve Christina Campbell issuing the final three in 1.1 innings.

Also for UNK, Colorado senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman drew a team-best four walks and scored once, Lincoln senior right fielder Carlee Liesch went 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI with Colorado relievers Madison Rosenthal and Stacy Bott combing for four K's and no runs over the final 2.1 innings. Finally, the teams combined for 22 runners left on base.

In the late game, Goodban (Lincoln Pius X) picked up her sixth win and went the distance for a fourth time. She fanned 12 of the 29 batters she faced and blanked the 'Cats over the final four innings.

UNK was limited to four hits and six walks by 'Cats starter Hayden Simmons. The Lopers scored twice in the first and third innings to never trail. They did so using the long ball as Schaneman belted a two-out, two-run shot to center in the first with Gosker hitting a dinger to right in the third. Schaneman started that inning with, of course, a base on balls.

The Lopers now have hit 19 homers to date with Gosker (five) the leader.
