Game Recap: Softball |

Lopers Record Second MIAA Sweep

Kearney, Neb. – Lefty Madison Rosenthal threw five shut out innings in game one and freshman Sydney Thomason delivered a two-out, game winning single in the top of the seventh in game two as Nebraska-Kearney swept Missouri Western State, 3-0 and 4-2, Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph.

These games were pushed back three full days due to wintry weather. Both clubs started their MIAA seasons with sweeps, UNK (10-12, 4-0) beating Northwest Missouri and the Griffons (7-13, 2-2) besting Fort Hays State.

This is UNK's best MIAA start, surpassing a 3-0 effort in 2020, and its best league start since the 2006 team went 8-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.

Rosenthal (Johnstown, Colo.) earned her second win of the season in style as she struck out five and allowed just two singles and a double in five innings of work. She got around five walks thanks to a defense that committed no errors and turned a key double play in the sixth. Sophomore Stacy Bott (Thornton, Colo.) entered with runners at first and no outs. After getting a fielder's choice to knock off the lead run, she coaxed the Griffs seven-hole hitter into a 4-6-3 double play. MWSU went down in order in the seventh.

Blair sophomore Katie Gosker went yard for a third straight game, this time hitting a three-run shot in the fourth. She leads the team with six long balls to date. Finally, Omaha sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube went 3 for 3 with a run from the five-hole.

In the night cap, UNK tallied two unearned runs in the first and two unearned runs in the seventh to earn the win. Lincoln senior Kelsey Goodban had another strong outing (5.1 IP, two hits, one earned run, four K's) with Bott picking up her second win. She threw 1.2 scoreless innings while fanning two.

Thomason had an RBI triple in the first with Gaube adding and RBI single. After the Griffs tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, UNK's seventh inning rally started thanks to an infield error and walk. While a fielder's choice followed, Thomason (3 for 4, one run) brought home the winning run with a single to center with Gaube (2 for 3) drawing a walk to add some insurance.

MWSU did have runners at second and three with two down in the bottom of the inning but a harmless ground out ending the game.

The Lopers remain in St. Joe this week as they take part in the Drury Inn Invitational this Friday-Sunday, playing six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conf. (NSIC) teams.
