UNK Throws Up 22 Runs in Saturday Sweep

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team pounded out 24 hits and drew seven walks to roar past Wisconsin-Parkside, 13-0 (5 innings), and Upper Iowa, 9-3, Saturday evening in St. Joseph, Mo.

This was the first day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic, hosted by Missouri Western State. Due to rainy weather on Friday, the format and schedule of the tourney has changed several times. UNK (12-12) now faces Bemidji State of Minnesota Sunday at 9 a.m. and then UIU (8-9) at 3 p.m. to conclude a long week.

Against the Rangers (3-14) from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Lopers pounded out 13 hits, scored all of its runs over the first four innings and got a three-hit complete game shut out from California senior Hannah Ice.

Five different UNK players had two hits in the win including nine-hole hitter and senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka. The Lincoln native went 2 for 3 with three runs and belted her first homer of the spring, a two-run shot, in the fourth. Next, Omaha redshirt junior center fielder Bri Healy went 2 for 4 and three RBI's and California freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason finished 2 for 3 with a run and three RBI's. In the circle, Ice improved to 2-1 by fanning two and walk two over five full.

Kearney had 11 hits against the Peacocks and erased an early 2-0 hole. The Lopers tallied three in the bottom of the first and erupted for five in the fifth. Lincoln senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (4 for 4, two runs & two RBI's) and Thomason (3 for 4, one run & one RB) paced the offense with Lincoln senior Kelsey Goodban now 6-4 after tossing her fourth complete game. She fanned 11, one off her career-best effort, in facing 32 batters overall. The right hander allowed just five hits and two earned runs and shut out UIU over the final four innings.

The big hits in the key fifth inning were a pair of two-run singles from Colorado senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman and Blair sophomore catcher Katie Gosker. That helped break a 3-3 tie with UNK adding another run in the sixth.
