Ichabods Clip the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods won two singles matches in three sets to get past 25th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Topeka.

This was the MIAA opener for both. UNK (7-6) is at Northwest Missouri State on Sunday with WU (5-8) hosting Fort Hays State.

The Lopers suffered its third 4-3 loss this spring as the 'Bods rallied from a 3-1 hole. They have now won three straight over UNK after dropping six in a row to the Lopers between 2013-18.

Freshmen Masha Hatouka (Belarus) and Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) won 7-5 at number two to help UNK take the doubles point. After WU won in straight sets at number two singles, Ranaivo won in straight sets at number four (6-4, 6-2) as did Mexican sophomore Jazmin Zamorano at number three (6-1, 6-4). That made it 3-1 with Zamorano pushing her singles win streak to nine straight.

However, the 'Bods won a tight match at number five (6-4, 7-5) and then Spanish sophomore Marta Torres tied things up with a three-set win in the top spot (6-4, 2-6, 6-3). Finally, sophomore Cadence Lynn got past Lincoln freshman Clare Plachy at number six (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) to secure the dual win.

Sunday's match in Maryville has been pushed back two hours to a 2 p.m. start. The 'Cats are 9-4 (1-0) after a win over Hays on Saturday.
