Cat Nipped in St. Joe

Kearney, Neb. – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats picked up a fourth straight win after a 4-3 decision over 25th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.

This MIAA dual was set to be played outside in Maryville but moved indoors and up the road due to wintry conditions. Northwest (10-4, 2-0) has now won five in a row over UNK (7-7, 2-0).

This marks the fourth 4-3 loss for the Lopers this spring; Kearney also suffered a 4-2 loss to nationally-ranked Augustana in the winter. UNK's seven wins have come by scores of 6-1 or 7-0.

Northwest got off to a 1-0 lead as they allowed a combined five points at number two and three doubles. Colombian sophomore Melisa Becerra and Mexican sophomore Jazmin Zamorano did rally from a 4-2 hole to post a 7-6 (5) win at number one doubles.

Beccera won in straight sets at number one singles (6-4, 6-3) as did Zamorano at number four (7-6; 7-6) and Madagascar freshman Narindra Ranaivo at three (6-1, 6-1). However, NW won in straight sets at number six (7-6, 6-3) and took three-set matches at five (7-5, 6-7, 6-1) and two (2-6, 6-0, 6-3) to record the win.

UNK looks to rebound Wednesday at Fort Hays State (6-5, 0-2). The team then gets a long break before hosting Newman on April 9.
