Power & Pitching Leads UNK Over WJC

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Kelsey Goodban threw 6.1 strong innings and Nebraska-Kearney hit three home runs to down William Jewell (Mo.), 6-2, Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo.

This game was part of the Drury Softball Classic. UNK (6-12) fell to the Evangel Valor, 6-5, earlier on Saturday.

Goodban (Lincoln Pius) evened her record to 4-4 by fanning eight, walking just one and allowing two earned runs. Sophomore newcomer Stacy Bott (Thornton, Colo.) got the final two outs as the Cardinals (2-10) from the Great Lakes Valley Conference tallied single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

Freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) led the offense from the three-hole by going 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBI's. She hit a three-run dinger in the seventh after having singles in the fourth and fifth innings.

Freshman designated player Lyndsey Roth (Lincoln North Star) led off the game with a homer and then three batters later senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) went yard. Roth now leads UNK in long balls with four. In between the dingers, sophomore outfielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross Catholic) had an RBI double in the fourth.

The NAIA Valor, playing in its hometown, improved to 5-4-1 by tallying four unearned runs to take game one. Senior righty Abby Jo Emmitt (3-3) fanned 10 over the final 3.2 innings to earn the win.

UNK erased a 2-0 deficit with a four-run fourth. After EU tallied two runs in the fifth and sixth, the Lopers scored once in the sixth. Kearney tallied eight hits and drew six walks but left eight stranded. Senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius) went 3 for 3 with a run scored from the leadoff spot with senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) having two RBI's from the nine-hole.

The Lopers start MIAA play next weekend at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri before another non-con tournament in two weeks.
