UNK Blanks the Mavericks; Southern Trip Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team swept Minnesota State, 7-0, in its 2021-22 home opener Monday afternoon in Grand Island.

The Lopers (6-2) pick up another key Central Region win while the Mavericks fall to 11-5. This dual was slated for Harmon Park in Kearney but moved up the road due to wintry weather.

Facing the Mavs in a dual for the first time in 11 years, UNK took two of the three doubles matches and swept three through six singles. The Lopers, receiving votes for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Top 25 poll, have now shut out four foes to date.

Colorado freshman Alexis Bernthal and Belarus freshman Masha Hatouka won 6-0 at three doubles with Missouri senior Pranathi Gannavaram and Mexican sophomore Jazmin Zamorano winning at number two, 6-3. UNK improves to 17-7 in doubles, using

Zamorano (four), Hatouka (five), Lincoln freshman Clare Plachy (six) and Kyrgyzstan sophomore Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova (three) each won in straight sets with Bernthal (two) and Madagascar freshman Narindra Ranaivo (one) rallying for three sets wins. Both dropped their first set but rolled over the final two. Hatouka is now 7-0 in duals with Plachy earning her second collegiate dual win.

UNK has a challenging weekend ahead as it faces nationally-ranked Angelo State and Midwestern State in Texas and Cameron University (6-2) in Oklahoma.
