Lions Stop Long Win Streak

Kearney, Neb.  – The Missouri Southern State Lions ended Nebraska-Kearney's 11-game win streak by taking a MIAA double header, 9-3 and 3-0, Friday evening in Joplin.

MSSU (18-15, 6-5) improves to 11-3 at home and has now won five of the last six over UNK (16-14, 6-2). The Lopers win streak was the program's longest in 23 years and began on March 5 over William Jewell, 6-2.

In the night cap, it was a pitcher's duel between senior Kelsey Goodban (Lincoln Pius) and Mo Southern junior Bailey Lacey. Both shut out the opponent over the first five innings with the pair allowing a combined six hits during that stretch. Lacey (8-6) then tossed a scoreless sixth with the Lions finally hitting pay dirt in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore left fielder Yazmin Vargas led off with a bunt single and then junior shortstop Josie Tofpi followed with a single up the middle. That pushed Goodban from the game and brought in Colorado sophomore Stacy Bott. Goodban allowed just four hits in five innings with three strikeouts and a walk.

After Vargas and Tofpi (2 for 2) recorded stolen bases, junior first baseman and clean up hitter Leighton Withers (2 for3) belted a three-run homer to right to provide the winning margin. That marked her team-leading six dinger of the year and second on the day. Lacey worked a clean seventh to earn her fourth shut out of the spring.

Senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) went 2 for 2 from the nine hole to pace the Loper offense.

In game one, the Lions never trailed as they scored three in the first, three in the third and two more in the sixth. Four Lions had two hits apiece including Withers (2 for 4, two runs & three RBI's) and Vargas (2 for 4). Sophomore Kara Amos (8-7) tossed a eight-hit complete game with Colorado sophomore southpaw Madison Rosenthal allowing three earned over four innings of relief.

UNK did make it a one-run deficit with a three spot in the top of the third. Blair sophomore catcher Katie Gosker and Omaha sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3) had RBI singles with Colorado senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman recording a sac fly to center. However, Mo Southern scored three times in its half of the inning thanks to two singles, two walks, wild pitch and hit batter.

UNK heads to Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon. The Gorillas (21-14, 3-7) have lost six in a row after getting swept by Fort Hays State today, 5-1 and 9-8.
