Kearney, Neb. – The 42nd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team won close matches at number three doubles and six singles to sweep Northeastern State, 7-0, Thursday afternoon in Tahlequah, Okla.

The Lopers (11-7, 4-2 MIAA) now have nine sweeps on the year including four in a row. Their other two wins came by 6-1 scores. This marks UNK's first victory over NSU (4-12, 0-5) in 13 tries. The Lopers got close in 2017, 5-4, and again in 2019, 4-3.

To start the dual, both teams took a doubles match by a 6-2 score. Senior Pranathi Gannavaram (Lee's Summit, MO.) and freshman Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius X) rallied from a 5-4 deficit at number three to help UNK take the point. The pair rolled in the tie breaker, 7-3, as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead.

In singles, the Lopers won in straight sets between one trough five. Current MIAA Player of the Week Jazmin Zamorano (Sonora, Mexico) won a 14th straight match, 6-1, 6-3, at number two with freshman Masha Hatouka (Belarus) winning by almost the same score at five, 6-2, 6-1. Finally, Plachy secured the sweep thanks to a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 decision at number six. She scored five straight points to erase an early 1-0 deficit.

The competition ratchets up tomorrow as UNK heads to No. 6 Central Oklahoma (12-1, 5-0). The Bronchos only loss is to current No. 1 Barry (Fla.), 4-0, with UCO having three nationally-ranked singles players with all three doubles pairs ranked as well. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
