Seventh Sweep of the Season

Kearney, Neb. – The 48th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis swept 75th-ranked Newman, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Harmon Park.

The Lopers improve to 9-7 (2-2) and beat the Jets (11-8, 1-3) for a third straight time. UNK's home stand continues Sunday when Emporia State (5-7, 1-2) visits at 11 a.m.

This was UNK's seventh 7-0 victory of the 2021-22 season. Kearney took the doubles point thanks to close wins by Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) at number one, 6-4, and Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) at number three, 7-5. NU won 6-3 at the second spot. In duals, UNK is now a combined 29-19 in doubles.

The Blue & Gold secured the dual win as they had four straight set wins in singles. To record the sweep, Bernthal (6-3, 3-6, 10-7) and Becerra (5-7, 7-5, 10-3) had to win a third set. This was Bernthal's first appearance at number three with Becerra now 10-5 in the top spot.
