Ichabods Take MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods scored two goals in the first 18 minutes and then held off Nebraska Kearney, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This was the MIAA opener for both. The Ichabods (6-1-1, 1-0-0) and Lopers (0-7-1, 0-1-0), along with Fort Hays State and Emporia State, are in a "scheduling pod" and thus played a non-conference game last Sunday in Topeka. WU won that one, 1-0.

"They definitely played with a different game plan in the first half which took our girls a little while to adapt to," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "Instead of playing a high center forward, they took the center forward and dropped them in a pocket behind the midfield. That's why they were constantly getting behind us. In the second half, our backline was able to adjust and figure out how to apply pressure. That's the challenge of playing a team twice in a week."

Sophomore Khloe Schuckman got the scoring going when she found the back of the net at 12:20. Her second goal of the fall, she was in the right box and had just gained possession of the ball after UNK knocked it loose from freshman Belle Kennedy. Six minutes later, Schuckman drew a foul on the left wing. That allowed Elkhorn senior Jaedyn Johnson to setup for a free kick. Her shot from about 28 yards out just snuck underneath the crossbar for a 2-0 lead.

"Right now, our hardest thing is the consistency of 90 minutes. We play a good 45 one half and then a bad 45 in the second or vice versa," said Breton.  "You still see a lot of good moments."

UNK was the aggressor in the second half and cut the deficit in half when Kansas senior Caralee Legg banged one home from about 22 yards out. In a scramble situation deep in the WU third, Legg got possession, dribbled up and found the upper right corner of the net for her first career goal and fourth career point (not counting the 2021 "COVID" spring season).

"That was a great shot from a senior who has really put in the time and effort," said Breton. "We're getting there, piece by piece."

Springfield freshman Emma Middleton had a chance to possibly tie things up a few minutes later as she was assisted to the ground by a WU defender in the box. However, no foul was called and play continued. Middleton ended the afternoon with a team-best three shots.

Lincoln senior keeper Raegan Wells stopped two shots to earn the win for the 'Bods with Lincoln sophomore Mackenzie Smith stopping a WU penalty kick in the first half as part of an eight save day. Finally, Kansas senior Lily Engeman and Kearney freshman Gracie Perez got off shots for the Lopers.

"I would like to see more attack opportunities and the girls to play with confidence. When we play with confidence, we're perfectly fine. But for some reason it takes us 20, 30 minutes to get to something that we should be able to from the jump," said Breton.

UNK spends the next two weekends on the road, visiting Northwest Missouri (4-2-2, 0-1-0) and Missouri Western (3-3-2, 1-0-0) first.
