Lopers Tie the Griffs in St. Joe

Kearney, Neb. – True freshman Reagan Downes scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Mackenzie Smith stopped eight shots as Nebraska Kearney tied Missouri Western State, 1-1, Friday in St. Joseph, Mo.

This is the first season college soccer isn't playing overtime. UNK (0-7-2, 0-1-1) records its 32nd all-time tie with the Griffons now at the .500 mark overall (3-3-3, 1-0-1).

Downes (Olathe, Kans.) headed in a free kick taken by senior Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan.) just two minutes after the break. Setting up 30 yards away on the left wing, Engeman's ball bounced in the box with MWSU keeper Keeley Kroonenberg tapping it back out. That's when Downes headed the ball into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

MWSU, recording 16 shots on the night, countered 10 minutes later as senior forward Kalli Campbell took a shot from the far right wing. The ball managed to go just over Smith's hands, bang off the cross bar with sophomore midfielder Elisabeth Pujado waiting in the box for the tap in and her fourth goal of the fall.

Smith (Lincoln H.S.) made five saves in the first half and three in the second with her last one coming with only 55 seconds left. MWSU also took all four corners in the contest. UNK saw freshman Emma Middleton (Springfield) get off two shots, one on goal, with Wichita senior Cammie Davis one of three Lopers to go all 90 minutes.

The Lopers head to Maryville, Mo., Sunday at 1 p.m. to face Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats (4-3-2, 0-2-0) fell to Fort Hays State tonight, 1-0.
