UNK Wraps Up Fall Season in Oklahoma

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's tennis team finished the fall by winning 20 matches at the annual ITA Central Regional in Edmond, Okla.

This three-day event, hosted by Central Oklahoma, featured singles and doubles brackets. There were "A" and "B" draws as well as consolation matches. The winners on the championships side advance to the ITA Small College National Championships later this fall.

In doubles, UNK saw sophomores Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) finished runners up in the "B" main draw with sophomores Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and Masha Hatouka (Belarus) runners up in the "A" consolation bracket.

Bernthal and Plachy went 3-1, winning their third-round match 9-8 (7-5) over the second-seeded tandem from Harding. They fell 8-5 in the championship to a pair from Northeastern State. Next, Ranavio and Hatouka took their second match by a 7-6 (9-7) score before falling 6-3 in the finals. Also in doubles, sophomore Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) and Melisa Becerra (Colombia) were down 4-1 in their "A" first round singles match but came back to win 8-4.

Zamorano led the way in singles as she reached the "A" quarterfinals. Winning her first three matches in straight sets, Zamorano fell to Missouri Western's Izzy MacGibbon by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Next, Bernthal reached the "A" console quarters as she won two matches including her second (4-1, 2-4, 13-11). Finally, Hatouka reached the "B" quarters thanks to two straight set victories, Becerra advanced to the "A" round of 16 on the strength of back-to-back wins and Lincoln senior Thi Huynh had a first round three-set win in the "B" draws.

UNK is now off until February 2023.
