UNK Scores Late to Earn Win in Joplin

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Aspen Brandich scored in the 72nd minute to help Nebraska Kearney get past Missouri Southern State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Joplin.

The Lopers (3-11-2, 2-5-2) earn their first fall road win in over five years (9/13/18 at Washburn). UNK also has eight points in the MIAA standings and has a chance at making the eight-team MIAA Tournament in two weeks.

The game was scoreless over the first 63 minutes with the Blue & Gold defense fighting off six first half corners. In the 64th minute, UNK was on the move and had a throw in just inside Lions (0-14-2, 0-8-1) territory. The teams battled for possession with the Lopers eventually winning that and sending the ball to the left wing.

A streaking Branch got control, made a quick pass to junior Katie Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) who sent a cross to the right box. Sophomore Gracie Perez (Kearney) was waiting for it and used her left foot to beat MSSU goalie Bella Smith by going upper left. This marks Perez's first career score.

However, the Lions tied things up 10 minutes later. UNK lost possession in their own territory and after a Lions throw-in, they sent a pass to the top of the box. While the Loper defense took out that player before she could get a shot off, freshman Kennedy Williams came flying in and poked the loose ball into the back of the net.

It took less than three minutes for the score to change again as sophomore Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) sent a long ball down the right side of the field. While MSSU regained possession, Smith's pass to a defender was stolen by senior Cammie Davis (Wichita) near the Lions goal. She quickly found Brandich (Colorado Springs) who was running unguarded down the center of the field. Brandich promptly tallied her second career goal from eight yards out.

Freshman Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) made one save over the final 32:30 to earn the win with junior Mackenzie Smith (Lincoln H.S.) having two saves in the first 57:30. Perez had two of UNK's seven shots with UNK allowing just one corner in the second half. Finally, super senior Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan) again went all 90 minutes.

UNK faces Fort Hays State (11-3-3, 7-2-1) and Emporia State (7-5-4, 6-2-1) next weekend at Foster Field.
