Hornets Win on a Blustery Fall Day at Cope; Senior Day Sunday

Kearney, Neb. – Two-time All-American Mackenzie Dimarco scored two goals to help Emporia State down Nebraska Kearney, 3-1, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

On a blustery fall day, the Hornets improve to 8-5-4 (7-2-1) while the Lopers fall to 3-12-2 (2-6-2). UNK still has a chance at the eight-team MIAA Tournament if it beats Fort Hays State (11-2-3, 7-1-1) on Sunday afternoon and gets a few other results to go their way. Hays battles first-place Washburn on Friday night.

Dimarco now has 77 goals in 83 career games as she found the back of the net in the sixth and 55th minutes. On the first, UNK didn't connect on a pass near midfield, and she got possession, raced down the field and past the defense for a one-on-opportunity. In the second half, Dimarco was in the right corner of the UNK box and, after getting a pass from Hannah Woolery, spun around, and scored. Senior Anna Burnett then banged one home from 25 yards out, with the assist from Woolery, in the 65th minute.

"It was a scrappy game, and we gave up a very silly goal at the very beginning," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "We reacted well the rest of the half and then they got an easy second goal. Their third (goal) was legit but we must be sharper in those moments. For us to make that next step as a team, we must demand more in regards to no allowing the little mistakes that put us down." Jordan Renard

UNK was outshot by just a 19-11 margin with Hornet keeper Mackenzi Goen making five saves. Junior Katie Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) might've cut the deficit to 2-1 as it appeared she was about to go one-on-one with Goen in the 60th minute. However, the Lopes were dinged for being offsides.

The Lopers fought off 11 Hornet corners and then had seven of their own after halftime. In the 74th minute, sophomore Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan.) sent the ball into the Emporia box where sophomore Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) managed to get a shot off in traffic. While Goen recorded the save, senior Raegan Downham (Cheyenne, Wyo.) was there for the put back.

"That's set piece goal number four, I think for us this year and it's great to see progress there. I would like to see (more goals) in live play," said Breton. "We had a lot of good chances and one that was taken away for being offsides. It is what it is and we can't change that."

Olsen, freshman Jordan Renard (Lincoln NE) and sophomore Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) had two shots apiece with freshman keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) having a season-high 11 saves.

Dimarco had seven shots on goal for ESU with freshman Katie Stoskopf replacing Goen with 13 minutes left.

"If we win on Sunday, we give ourselves a good opportunity. We still need some things to fall our way but, at this point, our future is in our hands," said Breton.
