Another Windy Day at Cope as UNK Clipped by UCO

Kearney, Neb. – The Central Oklahoma Bronchos scored two goals in a 15-minute span to beat Nebraska Kearney, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Bronchos improve to 4-2-5 (1-0-3) while the Lopers fall to 1-8-2 (0-2-2). UCO has now won five straight in the series after UNK had won in back-to-back years.

After battling a hefty South wind on Sunday vs. Northwest Missouri, UNK and UCO had to battle a sturdy North breeze all afternoon. Temperatures also dipped into the high 40's and low 50's.

"(The 20 mile per hour wind) completely changes the way we're able to play. When you have a team that's very counterattack heavy, they can use that wind very well," said Loper head coach Rob Breton.

With the wind at their backs, UNK got off four shots in the opening half including two right away. However, 'Chos keeper Caroline Faulkner stopped one taken by Wichita senior Camme Davis with an effort from Lincoln freshman Jordan Renard sailing high.

"We used the wind to our advantage in the first 10 minutes. We were right there but they had one moment," said Breton. "That's all it is. When you go back and look at the first half, it's one moment."

Outshot 4-3 in the half, UCO got on the board four minutes before half when sophomore Lauren Piper sent a pass into the fox from the right corner. Senior Amaya Grace was there to poke in for her fourth goal of the fall. Piper's father, Neil, briefly was UNK's head coach in the spring of 2022.

"Great finish by them. We had opportunities, we had chances and sometimes it's just about digging a little deeper. Great you have the chance but what are you going to do with it?" said Breton.

UCO controlled more of the action in the second half, but UNK still had some excellent opportunities to score. That included Renard having a one-on-one play with Faulkner. However, the 'Chos increased its lead after junior Stormie Ramsey fired off a strong shot from the left corner. It ricocheted off a Loper defender and into the near corner of the goal.

"We did a great job of organizing all the marks and then there was a late runner no one was ready for. All of sudden, everyone calls and she goes over and whips the ball in," said Breton. "It's just above our center back's head, hits us and goes into the goal. It's unlucky but sometimes you have to make your own luck."

Davis, Renard and Colorado sophomore Kea Barnes had two shots apiece for UNK. The 'Chos out shot the Lopers by just a 9-8 margin while also taking two more corners, 4-2. Finally, Grace (three) and Harmony Turner (two) led UCO in shots.

"We kind of put ourselves in a hole (at halftime). "We're down 1-0 against a team that is very direct and after we had the wind," said Breton. "I said you're going to have to work twice as hard and for the last 30, 35 minutes of the game … that's our team."

UNK hosts Newman on Sunday afternoon. Game time is NOON.
