Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Goals a Plenty in Home Win Over Newman

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's soccer team scored four goals, its most in eight years, to fly by the Newman Jets, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Lopers improve to 1-2-2 in conference play (2-8-2 overall) while NU from Wichita loses a third straight to drop to 2-9-2 (1-4-0).

Back in September UNK downed Quincy (Ill.) by a 3-0 margin. Today, they scored two goals in each half and got goals from four different players.

"You can't ask for an all-around better game. Two set piece goals, two live play goals and all of them were team goals. It wasn't anything individual," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "We controlled the game, we set the tempo, we didn't let them get anything easy. When they got chances, we made them work for everything."

UNK's last four goal game in a Sept. 2015 win over Wayne State, 4-1. This marks the fifth time a Blue & Gold squad has reached four goals with the record of six coming in an Oct. 2010 win over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Of note, UCCS had two own goals in that contest.

"This is what we can do. Offense was phenomenal, defense was phenomenal. Everything from top to bottom was brilliant," said Breton.

Veteran defender Raegan Downham (Cheyenne, Wyo.) started the party when she sent a long ball down the field. Junior Katie Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) not only chased the ball down but also got past her NU defender and then beat the goalie for a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. About seven minutes later, junior Ivana Siles (Boliva) was fouled in the attacking zone. Sophomore Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) took the free kick which Silves headed into the left corner of the Jets net.

After the break, senior Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan.) set up for a free kick about 30 yards out. She found senior Aspen Brandich (Colorado Springs) in the left corner of the box. While her shot attempt was saved, NU keeper Jordan Webster couldn't corral the ball and thus senior Cammie Davis (Wichita) was there for the putback. Finally, sophomore Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) got lose in the Jets corner in the 87th minute. She sent a pass to Davis who quickly found sophomore Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan.) in the center box for the final point.

Defensively, UNK fought off eight second half corners as well as 10 shots (six on goal). Freshman keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) recorded four saves before junior Mackenzie Smith (Lincoln H.S.) made two down the stretch.

"The offense finally allowed the defense to show how good they are. When you create that offensive piece, it shows how good the defense really is. Normally they are involved for all 90 minutes and they have to keep us in it," said Breton. "(Playing with a lead) we decided we're not going to let it go. That's a huge jump from last fall. We had two leads where we lost one game and got a draw the other. This is the best stop we could've made as a team."

UNK is on the road the next two weekends, visiting Rogers State and Northeastern State first.
