Washburn Wins MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods scored three second half goals to beat Nebraska Kearney, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in Topeka.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams. Last weekend in Kearney, the 'Bods (7-1-0, 1-0-0) downed the Lopers (1-7-0, 0-1-0) by a 2-1 score on the strength of two second half goals.

Today with a minute left before halftime, junior midfielder Jadyn Allen scored her second goal of the fall after taking a pass from junior midfielder Ana Muruzabal. About 10 minutes earlier, super senior Cammie Davis (Wichita) saw her shot attempt go just wide of the WU net.

About 10 minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Viviana Soto-Herrera converted a penalty kick to give her team a two-goal lead. Keepers Raegan Wells and Mackenzie Smith (Lincoln) both made saves two minutes prior with another WU shot going left of the net.

Less than two minutes later, junior defender Josie Boyle scored off a corner taken by freshman forward Mackinly Rohn. Like Soto-Herrera, this was her first goal of the fall. Finally, senior forward Riley Painter had her first goal of 2023 when she scored in the 72nd minute.

UNK two shots in both halves with its lone corner coming in the early going. Smith stopped four shots over 75:43 with freshman Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) going the last 14:17. Davis had two shots to pace the Loper offense with sophomore reserve Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan.) and junior Emily Flowers (Kansas City) having shots as well.

The Lopers host Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri next weekend.
