UNK Shoots Down Newman, Picks Up First MIAA Win

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Hanna Schimmer scored two more goals, including one in the 75th minute, to help Nebraska Kearney edge Newman, 3-2, Friday night in Wichita.

The Lopers (5-2-4, 1-2-2) pick up their first MIAA win of the year and keep the Jets winless (0-10-1, 0-5-0) in the process.

Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) now has eight goals in the season after converting her third penalty kick of the fall and tallying the game winner. Raliegh Mercer set the Loper record for goals in a single season with nine in 2011.

UNK held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but the Jets came back each time. Schimmer broke the ice in the 28th minute with Jet senior Makenzie Shay knotting things four minutes later after heading in a free kick. Five minutes into the second half, junior Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) gave UNK the lead back with her second goal of the fall. Twenty minutes later, however, junior Maylani Birckbichler knocked in a loose ball after a throw in deep in UNK territory.

With 15 minutes left, freshman Camrynn Nitta (Mililani, Hawaii) found Schimmer near the box and just after NU had possession near midfield. Schimmer spun around and, while falling, tallied the winner.

UNK fired off 23 shots, six shy of the school record, with eight being on goal. Not surprisingly, Schimmer peppered Jets keeper Carla Apodaca to the tune of nine shots (six on goal) with Colorado freshman Daniella Iaquinta (four) being the other Loper with more than one shot. In goal, sophomore Susan Bovaird (Lincoln NE) recorded five saves.

The Lopers head to Central Oklahoma (5-4-2, 2-1-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos downed Fort Hays State tonight, 5-2.
