Late Goal Helps #20 Griffs Slip Past the Lopers

Story Links

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Rachyl Benavides scored in the 81st minute to help 20th-ranked Missouri Western State get past Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium. Susie Bovaird

The Griffons (12-0-1, 7-0-0) pushed their win streak to 11 in a row while the Lopers fall to 5-4-4 (1-4-2). In the last five games MWSU has outscored the competition by a 10-0 margin.

In an evenly contested second half, UNK had several chances to take the lead. Sophomore Sarah Levy (Basalt, Colo.) had shot from the box that just sail past the far post with a header by freshman Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.) hitting the crossbar after Griffon keeper Keeley Kroonenberg got a finger on the ball.

MWSU had eight of the game's nine corners with Benavides close to knocking one near the Loper goal late in the second half. A few minutes later, junior Camrin Peaslee had possession near midfield and found a streaking Aidyn Woodall. She moved the ball down the center of the field and found Benavides at the top of the box. She turned and fired a left-footed shot that found the back of the Loper goal.

"It was a great game for us. They only had three shots that actually challenged our keeper. On the goal, we just shut off for a second because we didn't do what had worked the entire game," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "That's just learning, being consistent and being locked in for the moment. Against the top three or four teams, one moment can be the difference."

Senior Ivana Siles (Bolivia) had two of UNK's five shots on goal with eight different Lopers have at least one shot. Keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) had eight saves junior Corinne Stewart having a team-best five shots for the Griffs.

UNK hosts Northwest Missouri State on Sunday at 1p.m. The Bearcats (5-2-5) were at Fort Hays State on Friday night.

"We're there and now can we bring this same level, and maybe a little bit more, for Northwest on Sunday," said Breton. "This is what I've been waiting to see for about three weeks."
