Story Links

Kearney, Neb. – The 22nd-ranked Washburn Ichabods scored three second half goals to down Nebraska Kearney, 3-0, Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This marks the Lopers first loss of 2024 after four wins and four ties. UNK is now 0-2-1 in MIAA action and has two league points. WU, defending National Runners Up, move to 5-2-2 (2-0-1). This was their second trip to Foster Field as they took part in the UNK Invite #2 last month.

"It was a high pressing game. A very heavy metal press from them … they knew how to trap; they knew how to get us into corners and not allow us out," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "At the same time, we're giving up passes in bad areas, we were making easy mistakes that we shouldn't make in these high-pressured situations."

Senior Katie Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) had the game's first shot, a wide right effort in the 18th minute. About 15 minutes later, junior Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) saw her shot go wide left. She came in having scored in each of the past four games, tying a school-record. During this stretch, UNK had scored five goals as a team.

Washburn got on the board right after halftime as junior Belle Kennedy took a pass from junior Shayne Taylor. About 25 minutes later, senior Khloe Schuckman recorded her second goal of the fall with senior Jadyn Allen having a header in the 82nd minute.

"We shot ourselves in the foot on all three goals. We had poor clearance on the first one; they capitalized and take a great shot, a little bit of a deflection, but it's still a goal. Second one, part of the scouting report was don't let (Schuckman) put it on her right foot. She does and from the top of the box, puts it over our keeper," said Breton. "On the header, it was a poor decision on do we stop or do we drop in regard to attacking the ball."

In the second half, sophomore Anna Thorhallsdottir (Iceland) had a header stopped by WU keeper Hailey Beck with senior Ivana Siles (Bolivia) having her earlier shot saved as well. Finally, Schimmer had another shot attempt go wide of the 'Bods net.

"We haven't felt this feeling all season. Now they understand what it's like to lose instead of being kept in it by getting a draw or having a comeback," said Breton. "Some of the younger kids need to learn they can't make simple mistakes; some of the older kids need to have a higher demand from themselves. But, at the end of the day, it starts with our coaching staff, and we need to do better as well."

The 7th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies (6-2-1, 3-0-0) visit Foster Field Sunday at 1 p.m.
