#7 Jens Down the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Ashleigh Martin recorded a hat trick as seventh-ranked Central Missouri scored in bunches to down Nebraska Kearney, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Jennies, who've won 13 of the last 17 MIAA regular-season titles, improve to 7-2-1 (4-0-0) while the Lopers fall to 4-2-2- (0-2-2).

UCM tallied its first three goals in the game's first 13 minutes. After UNK came back and steadied themselves for a good 60 minutes, the Jens tallied another three goals over a five-minute span. Finally, the last goal came with less than two minutes remaining.

"First half is all on me because I have them the wrong tactics at the start. That's why they were able to score their first two goals," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "After that, we just can't put our keeper (Susan Bovaird) in bad situations."

Martin scored at 1:06, 12:57 and 88:39 with the last goal her sixth of the year. UCM had 14 corners overall and scored off two in the second half.

"You have to give them credit as they had 10 shots on goal and seven found the back of the net. Each one came in a good spot," said Breton. "They are a great team and there's a reason they are seventh in the country."

The Lopers were out shot by a 14-11 margin with the Jens having 10 on goal to UNK's eight. However, sophomore Kristen Wright made six saves with reserve Hayleigh Martin making another.

Junior Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) did make Martin pay in the 82nd minute after she received a yellow card. Martin collided with a Loper in the box and that led to Schimmer's second converted PK of the fall. Her six goals rank third most for a single season in school history. Raliegh Mercer (nine/2011) and Becka Taclott (seven/2010) are the only Lopers ahead of her.

"It's great attacking from them and they understand how to move, they understand how to make their run," said Breton. "For us, I hope we learned about individual responsibility today. Being able to be accountable for when you're not doing your job in that moment. When you shut off for a second, they score. That's the difference between a team that is competing to get into the (MIAA) tournament and team that has won 19 titles."

Nine different Lopers had a shot led by three from Schimmer and four from the bench. Finally, freshman Chloe Edmunds (Boise, Idaho) entered the game after UCM's early barrage and helped settle the backline.

"It's nice when you have freshmen that can step up, come off the bench and do what they need to do," said Breton. "This week in practice, we'll get back to the basics, work on our fundamentals and sharpen some of the things we need to be better at. We'll figure it out."

UNK heads to Newman (0-9-1, 0-4-0) and Central Oklahoma (4-4-2, 1-1-2) next weekend.
