Pagel's Late Goal Helps Lopers Tournament Hopes

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Katie Pagel scored in the 81st minute to help Nebraska Kearney get past Rogers State, 1-0, Friday night in Claremore, Okla.

This marks the Lopers first win over the Hillcats in five tries. More importantly, UNK (7-4-5, 3-4-3) is now in eighth place in the MIAA standings with 12 points. The top eight teams qualify for next weekend's league tournament; there are two regular season games left.

The seven wins is tied for third most in program history (since 2009). The 2016 squad also won seven contests with the 2013 (eight) and 2012 (nine) teams just ahead.

UNK dominated RSU (2-11-3, 1-6-3) but was having a hard time getting a ball past keeper Tiffany Brittan (eight saves). The Lopers out shot the 'Cats by a 23-8 margin with Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) finally finding pay dirt at 81:39. Her third goal as a Loper started after taking a pass from junior Gracie Perez (Kearney). She beat a defender and then moved easily to the top of the box where she went top shelf for the lead.

The 23 shots tied a season-high and also are six shy of the school record. UNK had 11 shots in the first half and 12 in the second as well as three corners. Junior Hanna Schimmer (eight) and Pagel (four) combined for 12 shots with true freshmen Chloe Edmunds (Boise, Idaho) and Billie Forrest (Taylorsville, Utah) at two apiece. Defensively, keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) recorded her fifth shutout of the fall by stopping three shots.

UNK heads to Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon. The River Hawks (11-5-0, 5-5-0 ) beat Fort Hays State tonight, 1-0.
