Sweep the Weekend ... Lopers Beat the Chargers Again

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team used back-to-back bunts in the eighth inning in game one and freshman pitcher Daniella Morillas was strong in game two as the Lopers swept Briar Cliff (Ia.) Saturday afternoon at Patriot Park.

The Lopers (8-5) took the weekend series from the NAIA Chargers (4-5) and returns home, weather permitting, in mid-March.

In game one, BCU shortstop Kylee Lukes belted two home runs to stake her team to leads of 4-0 and 7-2. She finished 2 for 4 with six RBI's but Iowa sophomore Madeline Janssen (3-2) limited the Chargers to just an unearned run over the final 4.1 innings.

The Lopers knotted things up at seven thanks to scoring twice in the fourth and fifth innings and once in the seventh. They did leave the bases full in the sixth and left the winning run stranded at third in the seventh.

The Chargers eighth featured a sac bunt, single and passed ball. However, Janssen got a pop up and line out to keep the damage at a run. In the bottom of the inning, Raymond freshman second baseman Alyssa Fortik laid down a sac bunt that the BCU first baseman fielded cleanly, but air mailed the throw. That tied the game and moved Fortik to second. Two pitches later, Waverly junior centerfielder Kelsey Cordes put down a bunt back to the pitcher. A good throw from Georgia Kroh wouldn't have got Cordes at first. However, the throw was in the dirt and went down the line, allowing Fortik to score.

UNK's offense in the game was paced by Wahoo sophomore shortstop Mary Chvatal (3 for 5, three runs & three RBI's) and Lincoln senior left fielder Carly Dembowski (3 for 5, run & RBI). Chvatal hit a two-run dinger in the fourth, her first of the year.

Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) threw 219 pitches and the final 11 innings on Friday to pickup two wins. Today, she started game two with Colorado senior lefty Madison Rosenthal taking over in the top of the fourth with UNK up 7-0. BCU came back, however, as Lukes hit a three-run shot in the sixth to make it just a two-run lead. With a runner at third and two down, Rosenthal got a strikeout to end the inning.

The Chargers leadoff batter in the seventh walked and that brought back Morillas. She worked around another walk and two passed balls to keep BCU off the board. Fittingly, a strikeout ended the game, her 20th of the long weekend.

Chvatal (3 for 4, two RBI's), Colorado junior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (2 for 4) and Colorado junior DP Addy Deal (1 for 3, two RBI's) led the offense.

UNK heads to Drury University next weekend for four games in two days.
