UNK Goes 1-1 in Arkadelphia

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams Spring Break trip continued Wednesday as the 18th-ranked women swept Ouachita Baptist, 7-0, while the men were nipped by the 12th-ranked Tigers, 4-3, in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The women (8-3), moving up eight spots in the latest ITA Rankings, have now won three in a row and recorded back-to-back shoutouts. Today, the Lopers allowed just five combined points in doubles with the number one pairing of Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Tanyaradzwa "Tanya" Midzi (Zimbabwe) winning by a 6-3 score.

In singles, UNK didn't drop a set, but 50th-ranked Melisa Becerra (Colombia) worked hard at number two; 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). She trailed 5-3 in the second set before scoring three straight and then rolled in the tiebreak. Also, junior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) won at six with junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) going 6-0, 6-0 at three.

The men (7-5) battled the No. 12 Tigers (8-2) with OBU winning on the strength of four straight singles victories. Once again, graduate Aaron Osmond (Cheltenham U.K.) and freshman Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) won at one doubles and are up to 40th in the country. At two, freshman Maksym Kulish (Ukraine) and graduate Adam Palecek (Czechia) fell by just a 6-4 score to the nation's third-ranked squad.

Three nationally-ranked Tigers (one through singles) won in straight sets but two of the wins were by scores of 7-6 (7-4) and 7-5. Finally, UNK tallied its final two points as Osmond rallied at four (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) and freshman Andy Brisdon (Manchester, U.K.) did the same at five; 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

UNK finishes up the week Friday at Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and Saturday at Cowley County (Kan.).
