Lopers Battle the Bearcats & Tigers on the Road

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up their Spring Break trip by both sweeping Southwest (Mo.) Baptist by identical 4-3 scores on Friday with the men falling to the top-ranked junior college team, Cowley (Kan.) County, by a 5-2 count on Saturday morning.

The 18th-ranked women (9-4) took the doubles point against the Bearcats (2-7) thanks to a pair of 6-3 wins at one and two doubles. UNK then won three of the first four singles matches to secure the dual. SBU did win a couple of lengthy matches at five and six to complete the scoring.

Senior and 50th-ranked Melisa Becerra (Colombia) out lasted 56th-ranked Ghada Dirninger at two (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) with seventh-ranked Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) winning 6-1, 7-6 (1) at four and junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) winning at three; 7-5, 6-3. Finally, Lincoln junior Clary Plachy was a tough luck loser at six; 6-2, 6-7 (0), 1-0 (17-15).

The men (8-6) lost the doubles point to SBU (3-6) but won at two and three singles to make it 2-2 on the scoreboard. Freshman Jip Mens (The Netherlands) won by a 7-6 (4), 6-4 count at two with graduate Adam Palecek (Czechia) taking his number three match, 6-4, 6-4.

While the 'Cats won the next match, 32nd-ranked Maksym Kulish tied things up at three thanks to a 6-3, 7-6 (5) decision in the top spot. It then all came down to six singles where freshman Andy Brisdon (U.K.) won a marathon, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. He was down 3-0 and then 5-4 before rallying.

UNK greatly altered its lineup on Sunday against the CCC Tigers (6-3). Freshman Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) stepped into the singles lineup and won at five (6-2, 6-2) as did freshman Ahmed Abdelaziz (Egypt) at six; 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Cowley had taken the doubles points thanks to 7-6 (3) and 7-5 wins at two and three with and then won in three sets at three singles. Finally, four Tigers are nationally-ranked in the NJCAA as well as two doubles pairings with the women's team playing UNK in an exhibition match on Sunday. 

The Loper women are now off until March 28 while the men host Concordia next Sunday in Harmon Park.
