UNK Falls on Day One of Crossover Tourney

Kearney, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears used 20 hits and nine walks to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 9-6 and 10-2 (5 innings), Saturday afternoon in Joplin, Mo.

These games were a part of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament. The Lopers (12-3) face the St. Cloud State Huskies (16-6) on Sunday at 10 a.m./12 p.m.

Colorado junior center fielder Eden McNally smacked a "Grand Slam" in the bottom of the second in game one to give UNK a 5-2 lead. Two singles and a walk loaded up the bases with McNally hitting her first homer as a Loper over the center field fence. The Northeastern (Colo.) J.C. transfer is now leading the team in batting average (.400) for the season.

Led by lead off hitter and third baseman Alexis Monty (3 for 5, two runs & three RBI's) and shortstop Sydney Pelzer (3 for 4, two runs), CSP countered with four in the top of the third and two more in fourth. All four runs in the second came after two were out with three being of the unearned variety.

Freshman Emmy Browne moved to 10-3 but allowed six earned in 4.1 innings. Junior lefty Eric McCullough was more effective (2.2 innings, no hits, two K's) to earn a save. For UNK, Colorado junior second baseman Rylyn Nelson was 2 for 4 with Lincoln junior first baseman Leagh Jurgens 2 for 3. Both scored once as well.

In the second game, it was just a 2-1 Golden Bears lead going into the bottom of the fourth. That's when they erupted for eight runs thanks to five hits (four singles), three walks, error, hit batter, and wild pitch. Pelzer (1 for 2, one run & three RBI's) and catcher Bryleigh Dana (1 for 3, two RBI's) at the plate with McCullough (10-1) throwing a complete game six-hitter. She fanned seven and walked just two.

McNally (2 for 3, two RBI's) and Omaha senior right fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3) led the Lopers.
