St. Patrick's Day Shut Out; Hays Visits Saturday

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Daniella Morillas allowed just two hits over six innings and sophomore Madeline Janssen picked up her third save as Nebraska-Kearney shut out St. Cloud State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Joplin, Mo.

The game was part of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament. UNK (13-14) was poised for a sweep of the Huskies (17-9) but left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh in game one and the score tied at three. After Cloud struck for three in the top of the eighth, the Lopers had two runs home and runners at second and third with one down. However, the Huskies got out of another jam and won, 6-5.

Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) is now 7-4 as she allowed just two singles while working around six walks. Fanning one, she threw 89 pitches. Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) walked the leadoff batter in the seventh, but she was thrown out at second by California junior catcher Jocelynn Molina. A strikeout then ended the game.

Three Husky hurlers combined to allow five hits and six walks over seven full innings. UNK got on the board in the third thanks to a leadoff double by Molina (1 for 2) and a one-out double from Colorado junior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (2 for 4). The Lopers added an insurance run in the fourth thanks to four walks and a wild pitch.

It was a pitcher's duel between Morillas and SCSU junior Emma Eickhoff in the early game as they both shut out the opponent over the first four innings, combining to allow just two hits. The Huskies broke through with a three-run fifth, but UNK countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the sixth.

The seventh featured both teams loading the bases but getting no one home. The Huskies used two walks and an infield single to have three on with two down. A Janssen strikeout got out of the jam and then UNK started its half of the inning with two singles and walk. However, a fielder's choice (out at home), line out to right and a fielder's choice pushed the game to extras.

A but single, advancement on a throw and error helped Cloud build a 6-3 lead. Omaha senior Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3, two runs) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning with Raymond freshman Alyssa Fortik (2 for 4) delivering an RBI single to right to make it 6-5. With the tying run at third and go-ahead run at second, UNK hit into another fielder's choice (out at home) and struck out.

For the Lopers, Molina went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Jansen and Molina each threw four innings, combining for six K's, seven walks and six hits.

UNK hosts Fort Hays State (13-11) next Saturday at Patriot Park.
